Break up by SMS? According to a study published by Mashable Social Media, 40% of people surveyed would be willing to break up while hiding behind a computer screen or telephone. The Internet even promotes this by providing examples of break-up text messages to send. Apparently, this has become common practice. A Google search will provide the following suggestion for a text message breakup: ‘we don’t have much in common, we should stay friends.’
We suggest otherwise. Breaking up through any digital medium is a demonstration of flakiness and a lack of respect for the other person. We are always told to treat others as we would like to be treated, and it is unlikely that anyone would hope to be broken up with via text message. You should always end a relationship in person. While it may be difficult, it will show the other person that you respect them and you will feel much better when you go to bed at night. No pillow is softer than a clear conscience.
No matter how it is done, a break up is never a pleasant experience. If you are the one who makes the difficult decision however, it’s important to act with class and dignity. You won’t regret it.
